Real Credentials That Matter
A competent plastic surgeon must hold a valid general medical license from the Dominican Medical Association, plus formal specialization in plastic surgery from an accredited institution. This is not a minor requirement, it's the foundation of everything. In the Dominican Republic, verify that your surgeon is an active member of professional societies like the Dominican Society of Plastic Surgeons (SODOCIP).
Continuing education matters too. Serious surgeons attend international conferences, maintain certification in current techniques, and participate in refresher courses. You can ask directly: Where did they study their specialty? Do they hold international certifications? Are they members of recognized medical societies? Clear, documented answers are a good sign.
Experience and Specific Focus
Not all plastic surgeons are alike. Some specialize in facial procedures, others in body contouring, others in reconstruction. What matters is choosing someone with real experience in the specific procedure you're seeking. If you want liposculpture, ask how many cases they've done. If it's a body lift, ask to see their portfolio of results.
Setting also matters. Where do they operate? Are the facilities accredited? What's the anesthesia team? A certified operating room with updated safety protocols and quality medical equipment significantly reduces risks. Experience without proper infrastructure is not enough.
Transparency During Your Consultation
A good surgeon takes time to understand what you want to achieve and tells you honestly what's possible and what isn't. They shouldn't promise perfect or impossible results, or use words like "guaranteed" or "permanent." The reality is more honest: we can improve significantly, but results vary based on your body, age, genetics, and post-operative care.
Expect them to discuss real risks. All surgery carries risks: infection, hematoma, changes in sensation, asymmetrical results. A surgeon who doesn't mention these is one to avoid. Also ask about their complication rate, what protocols they use to prevent them, and how they handle them if they occur.
Trust and Ongoing Communication
Finally, how do you feel during your consultation? Does the surgeon listen to you? Do they answer your questions without rushing? Do you feel respected and comfortable? Trust is not a luxury, it's essential. Clear communication before, during, and after surgery can make the difference between a positive and negative experience.
Seek references from previous patients if possible. Ask if you can speak with someone who's already had surgery with him. A surgeon confident in their work will be proud of their results and happy to connect you with satisfied patients.
The True Cost of Safety
Choosing by price is understandable, but it's where many people make mistakes. A cheaper procedure might mean a less experienced anesthesiologist, older equipment, or less time devoted to your case. The price difference between a competent surgeon and one without credentials can be tempting, but savings are quickly lost if something goes wrong.
