Implant exchange

Renews or adjusts your implants with a personalized plan.

Anesthesia

General anesthesia

Recovery

5-7 days

Overview

Implant exchange replaces previous prostheses with new ones, whether due to the passage of time, a desired change in size or shape, or a situation that makes renewal advisable. During the same procedure, Dr. Hermes can adjust the breast shape if needed. The goal is to update the result safely and harmoniously, aligned with your current goals.

Dr. Hermes's approach

Whenever possible, Dr. Hermes uses the previous scar to remove the old implant and place the new one. If needed, he adjusts the tissue capsule or implant position, and may combine the exchange with a lift to optimize shape. His humanistic, meticulous approach prioritizes your safety and a natural result suited to your current stage of life.

Risks and honesty

Risks are similar to a primary augmentation: infection, hematoma, asymmetry, changes in nipple sensation, and capsular contracture, which is sometimes the reason for the exchange. Depending on findings during surgery, the plan may be adjusted. Dr. Hermes reduces these risks with careful technique and close follow-up, but no procedure is risk-free and results vary.

Are you a good candidate?

It's for those who already have implants and want to renew them, change size or shape, or need to due to elapsed time or follow-up findings. Good overall health, not smoking, and realistic expectations are ideal. Dr. Hermes reviews the state of your implants and tissue in consultation to define the best plan with you.

Recovery, step by step

  1. 01

    First days (0-3)

Mild to moderate discomfort and pressure, controlled with medication. You'll wear a supportive bra continuously and rest. Recovery is often somewhat more manageable than the first surgery, though it varies depending on the adjustments made.

  2. 02

    Weeks 1-2

Swelling begins to subside and most patients resume light tasks and desk work. You continue with the supportive bra and avoid exertion. The new implants still feel high and firm.

  3. 03

    Weeks 3-6

Noticeable improvement in swelling and the implants begin to settle. Return to low-impact activity, still avoiding heavy lifting and intense exercise until Dr. Hermes clears you.

  4. 04

    Months 2-6

The implants fully settle and the shape looks more natural. Progressive return to full exercise. If the previous scar was used, there are usually no new visible scars. The updated result becomes clearly visible.

Frequently asked

There's no fixed mandatory date. Implants are not lifetime devices, but many patients keep them for many years without issue. Exchange is considered when you want a change, when there are signs that advise it, or after periodic check-ups. Dr. Hermes will guide you based on your case.

Yes. The exchange is a good time to adjust volume, whether to increase or reduce it, within what your tissue safely allows. Dr. Hermes assesses your current anatomy and goals to recommend the most suitable and natural option for this stage.

For many patients recovery is somewhat more manageable, especially if only the implant is changed using the same approach. If a lift or other adjustments are added, the process can resemble the initial surgery. Dr. Hermes will explain what to expect based on your specific plan.
